Regular Joe Hero

File this story in your memory banks, because I’ll bet we’ll be lining up at the movie theater to watch it on the big screen in a couple of years.

A man by the name of Bill Caswell–who is not a professional racer, by the way–took a $500 BMW and entered the World Rally Championship’s Rally Mexico event. Jalopnik has the account in two fantastic posts and it’s definitely worth a read. For example, except for a co-pilot, Caswell travelled to Mexico and entered the event with no crew. That meant that after finishing stages he was on the ground fixing his car in his driving suit. There are stories of fixing a busted fuel tank with duct tape and silicone, nearly sliding off a bridge because his borrowed track notes were in another language and starting a particular stage so late that he actually had to drive through crowds of people while on the clock.

You can read the first installment here. And then there’s an equally entertaining follow-up from the co-driverĀ here. This guy is definitely a hero for all the regular guys who would love to get a shot against the professional drivers in the big leagues.
