Thanks for the comments FordRacer, you make some good points. I remember being worried about how well the stock rods would hold up. How much horsepower, and rpm, do you think they are good for?
I believe the owner told me the cost was somewhere around 12 grand, but your mileage may vary depending on your engine builder. Currently the engine is in the car but with a very (and I emphasize the word “very”) mild tune. The owner plans to get the car to a tuner soon but money issues have kept him from getting it done. Believe me, I’d like to finish this series off with a good dyno session!
By the way, I did a version of this once back when the NASCAR guys were doing it and it was called the Clevite Engine Builders Challenge. Everything is pre-fit and all the major assemblies are put together which makes things a lot easier, but my time was still more than double what the Cup guys were doing. If the Comp Engine Duel will be anything like that and you plan on being on the Power Tour then I definitely recommend checking it out.
Also, I just posted the build sheet for this engine. It breaks down every part, where I got them and the cost. It’s a couple years old now so some of the prices may have changed, but the part numbers should still be good. In the future I plan on including these in the post, but this one is on the forums. While you’re there, please sign up and let us know how you would built it.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure it was a can of Dupli Color engine enamel (because that’s about all my local speed shop carries) and I remember thinking the same thing. But it was definitely labeled “Ford blue.”
Does anyone know if that was an older color or something?
Yes, you are right about the piston in the number seven hole being backward. That was caught after the short block was assembled but not before I’d shot that bit of video. Unfortuantely, by the time I edited the first section I’d forgotten about it. You have a good eye. I’m re-editing to cut that clip out. Thanks.
Yes, they are the aluminum Edelbrock heads. They’ve just been painted to give the engine a more original look. By the way, that’s also a new Edelbrock aluminum water pump under a coat of orange paint too.

No, this intake will only work with Edelbrock, or other Carter style carbs. Holleys will not fit, even if turned sideways.
